Project Idea
THE IDEA
Visual Soundscapes was inspired by many things.
Why not collect the acoustic data from before, during and after the pandemic, create a spectrogram that tracks the changes and turn that into art?
The second part of the idea:
Why not take all the satellite as well as terrain images of noise, air, light pollution from before and combine them with the images of their reduction and turn that into a composite artwork?
Why not use the things that went out of stock during the pandemic as materials for art?
Why do any of this?
Because they existed. Because it was true. And because we will forget.

Visual Soundscapes was inspired by many things.
- The absence of man-made noise pollution for a brief time around the globe during the height of the pandemic crisis.
- The news that seismologists around the world could see a difference in their seismometers.
- And people reporting globally that the birds sound louder now.
- And it was also inspired by this video of a spectrogram posted by a PhD student in Mumbai of the sounds heard during the lock-down in India,
- The news from MIT about recalculating time with a new algorithm to analyze time series calculations of data.
